¿ BEE UPDATE: LOCAL ERADICATION BEGINS
¿ Not the best day for a lot of local beekeepers today with DPI starting to euthanise hives in Lake Macquarie which are in the red 'eradication zone'. Not a good time for those beekeepers and certainly not for those bees.
¿ Those people with hives in the red zone (which is pretty much anywhere from Awaba north) are now being contacted by DPI to arrange for the destruction of hives and to discuss compensation. That process will continue for the next two weeks.
¿ On a positive note, there hasn't been any new detections for several weeks so, as bad as the situation is, DPI has done pretty well to trace and contain the spread.
¿ For those with hives in the eradication zone, DPI has advised that you are permitted to extract honey from a flow hive and/or move a honey super from any hive to a bee-proof enclosed space to extract honey, but this must be within the same zone only.
¿ You can apply for and read more about the compensation packages HERE.
¿ You can read DPI's latest updates and view zone maps HERE.
