¿ BEE UPDATE / COMPO FOR RECREATIONAL BEEKEEPERS
¿ In some promising news, DPI is now confident that the varroa mite outbreak can be contained to the current affected areas.
¿ DPI has also opened applications for compensation packages available to recreational beekeepers. This includes a $550 payment for each recreational hive which has to be destroyed.
¿ There are now 99 areas where the mite has been detected and hives at 97 of those properties have now all been euthanised.
¿ DPI is now beginning the horrible process of destroying all other hives within the 10km radius of those sites. These hives belong mostly to amateur or recreational beekeepers. That process is likely to take about five or six weeks. Registered hive owners will be contacted by DPI.
¿ There's been no new detections outside of the current eradication zones for the past week which is some good news.
¿ You can apply for and read more about the reimbursement packages HERE.
