I had the privilege of presenting Ian Lowe with the Premier’s Community Service Award this afternoon, surrounded by his family, friends, colleagues and Lake Macquarie Police District representatives.
Ian is a truly remarkable man, having distinguished himself throughout his 30 years as an SES operator, including being captain of the NSW SES Cooranbong Unit. He has an unblemished record of service to the community. Over the years his superiors recognised his skills, knowledge, experience and leadership qualities and called on him to provide training and guidance to crew members on a weekly basis. He and his crew also undertook additional training provided by the Newcastle Police Rescue Squad.
Ian has been heavily involved in the Cooranbong Rural Fire Brigade, serving as captain of Cooranbong Volunteer Bushfire Brigade for 20 years.
At 90 years of age, Ian remains dedicated to church and community activities and maintains an extensive community network.
Until recently he was cutting and splitting firewood and distributing it to the elderly. Yes, you read that right. Amazing!
Congratulations Ian, very well deserved.
