Member for Lake Macquarie Greg Piper has welcomed $180,000 worth of State funding to better monitor the condition of local beaches and the lake.

The announcement follows a successful funding application from Lake Macquarie City Council which will fund the remaining half of the project cost.

“The funding will allow the council to effectively monitor the physical and ecological condition of key components in Lake Macquarie’s coastal zone,” Mr Piper said.

“That includes physical changes to beaches and dunes, the aquatic health of the lake, and the ecological health of foreshore inter-tidal zones.

“The aim of the lake monitoring program is to assess the waterway’s ecological health at 10 locations throughout the year and report the results to the community in a ‘report card’ format.”

The grant is among 19 being made to 16 councils totalling more than $2.6 million. The projects range from beach erosion mitigation to coastal wetland rehabilitation.

Mr Piper said the NSW Government’s Coastal and Estuary Grants Program supports local councils in managing the risks from coastal hazards, such as coastal erosion, restoring degraded coastal habitats, and improving the health of NSW estuaries, wetlands and littoral rainforests.

Projects range from dune protection, wetland rehabilitation, erosion reduction in estuaries, beach access management and monitoring of the coastal and estuarine environment as part of the NSW Government’s commitment to better managing the State’s coastline.
