LAKE Macquarie MP Greg Piper has praised the five Toronto High School students who completed the 240km-long Great North Walk to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute.

“Their efforts were even more remarkable because they received the tragic news on the third-last day of their trek that one of their school mates, Jade Finn, had been killed in a car accident while travelling north on a family holiday,” he said.

“They're an absolute inspiration to many and I applaud them for their efforts.”

Mr Piper was at Newcastle to greet the students as they arrived at Queens Wharf at the end of their journey.

He also paid tribute to the students in a speech at State Parliament.
