Last year there were 1008 recorded domestic violence related assaults in the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area, while knowing many incidents go unreported.

Last year there were 1008 recorded domestic violence related assaults in the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area, while knowing many incidents go unreported.

Today, I joined Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jodie Harrison MP, Dawn Walker CEO Jenny's Place Domestic Violence & Homelessness Support and James Adrichrem from Housing Plus to turn the sod on a new $5.9 million refuge in Lake Macquarie.

This is the second refuge being built here under the NSW Government Core and Cluster program, delivered by Housing Plus with Jenny's Place to provide specialist support services. The refuge will consist of nine self-contained units, ensuring those who live here can do so safely and with privacy.

Importantly, unlike many other refuges, this one will allow teenage boys and adolescents to stay with their mothers and also be pet friendly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I wish there was no need for these types of facilities but there is, and every new refuge built is a step forward in making NSW a safer place for families escaping violence.

The refuge is expected to open mid 2027.
