Contract awarded to build six-unit women and children's refuge in Lake Macquarie
26th September 2025
Domestic and family violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women and children in NSW, and Lake Macquarie sadly, has higher rates than the state average.
Today, I joined Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jodie Harrison MP, to announce a $5.6 million investment to build a new pet-friendly women’s refuge in Lake Macquarie.
Aboriginal-led organisation Wandiyali has been awarded the contract to build six self-contained units for women and families escaping violence.
The announcement began with a smoking ceremony, a fitting way to acknowledge Country and promote healing, reflecting the refuge’s design — inspired by the traditional Aboriginal yarning circle — to create spaces of connection, safety, and community.
While we wish these services weren’t needed, I’m pleased Lake Macquarie will have another safe, supportive space where women and children can recover, rebuild independence, and access the help they need.
