Skin Check Truck saving lives one stop at a time
09th September 2025
Australia holds the unenviable record of having the world's highest skin cancer rate.
Some years ago, I had a basal cell carcinoma detected, which, luckily for me, could be surgically removed.
However, I have friends who have passed away from melanoma and even more who have struggled with the anxiety of an advanced melanoma diagnosis. It is a devastating disease.
In many cases, early detection can make all the difference, and that's why services like the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation Skin Check Truck are invaluable.
Since hitting the road in June 2023, melanographers aboard the bus have conducted nearly 12,000 free skin checks, detecting hundreds of melanomas and other skin cancers.
I was very happy to make a donation to the bus when it visited the Parliament of NSW today, which I'm told will go towards refuelling the life-saving vehicle so it can journey on to its next location.
Ps. I was given the all clear from melanographer Sue during my check this afternoon!
