Lake Macquarie Independent MP Greg Piper admitted he was relieved to finally secure land for a new multi-million-dollar sports facility in the region.
Five years after the sudden closure of the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre, the search has been on to find a replacement locale to suit the needs of the community.
And, on Wednesday 4 December, Mr Piper and Minister for Sport Steve Kamper unveiled a seven-hectare site on the grounds of Morisset Hospital as the perfect alternative.
It also takes in the existing bowling club and sports oval.
The announcement ends a multifaceted process, according to the local member.
“Finding a suitable replacement site for the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre, which closed without warning in 2019, was complex,” he said.
“An independent review found that if the ash dam wall at the nearby Eraring Power Station failed in the event of major seismic activity, there was serious potential risk to people at the centre.
“For five years, the loss of this much-loved community asset and local employer has been deeply felt by the residents of Lake Macquarie.
“So, I’m thrilled with this result.
“I can confidently say it is second to none.
“Since it’s ideally situated on the shores of Lake Macquarie, water sports enthusiasts will also enjoy easy access to the lake.
“It’s a win-win for everyone.”
Mr Piper said the transfer of land from NSW Health to the Office for Sport ensured the strong heritage and cultural value of the site was preserved and remained accessible to the public.
“I’m delighted this location will continue to serve our community and future generations for years to come,” he stated.
“The new indoor and outdoor facility will be purpose-built to support growing demand for sporting and recreation facilities in Lake Macquarie.
“The Office of Sport is now expected to work with NSW Health, Lake Macquarie City Council, NSW Government agencies and the local community to plan and design the sports centre.
“Construction will get underway after the existing health services at Morisset Hospital are relocated to Maitland Mental Health Rehabilitation Facility.”
