NSW Police and Lake Macquarie Police District are responding to numerous break and enter calls where property has not been secured. There are a few simple steps you can take to prevent risks and make yourself and your home less vulnerable to opportunistic criminals.

Ensure you lock your vehicles and remove all personal and valuable items from view. Remove garage remotes from your vehicle to prevent easy access to your home should your car be broken into. Store all valuable tools and trade equipment in locked storage or inside a garage where possible.

Protect your property by making sure all windows, doors and screens are secured and locked when you are not at home or asleep. Many break and enter burglaries occur when an opportunistic criminal gains access to a home or vehicle that has not been secured.

Money and jewellery are the two most common items stolen during break and enters. Do not leave handbags, jewellery boxes, keys, cash or wallets lying around at home. The easier it is for someone to spot, the easier it is for someone to snatch.

Should you find yourself a victim of break and enter or burglary call 000 and report the incident to Police. If you have any information about a crime, which is not an emergency, you can also contact Crime Stoppers NSW on 1300 333 000.

You can also report incidents of theft, graffiti, malicious damage, fraud, minor traffic incidents and lost property via the NSW Police Force Community Portal here.
