Where I stand on privatisation

Don’t believe the myth that only the Liberals sell our public assets. We saw a State Labor Government sell off NSW Lotteries and the electricity retailers, and we’ve seen the Coalition Government sell Eraring and Vales Point power stations, the lands and property registry, Newcastle Buses, the electricity poles and wires and our ports.

We all know how those deals worked out – skyrocketing power prices, buses that don’t run on time and port deals which included secret provisions to leave our region out in the cold on container trade.

I’ve consistently opposed the privatisation of public assets.

As you know, I was successful in legislating a mechanism that can lift the unfair provisions on Newcastle Port and was successful in seeing off the planned privatisation of the local Sport and Recreation centres.

We must protect what’s left of our public assets including Hunter Water, our trains and even our public health services.
