SOME BIG NEWS ON SPORT AND REC CENTRE
After a very long fight, I can confirm today that we're going to get a new sport and recreation facility at Morisset to replace what we lost at Myuna Bay.
I'll be joined by Sport Minister Stuart Ayres on site today to make the formal announcement, but I first wanted to share a few details with you and all of the 20,000 people who signed my petition.
Firstly, plans for a new facility at Eraring have been abandoned. It was not the best site for what our community deserves.
The new facility will be built on a site on Silky Oak Drive, off Morisset Park Road at Morisset Park. Long-time locals will remember the site as the old piggery which adjoins the Morisset Hospital lands.
I can also confirm that the new site and its facilities will be open to the local community and not restricted in the way that the Myuna Bay site was. It will be a community sport hub built for the 21st century which everyone can access.
While planning and feasibility studies are not yet complete, facilities will likely include sports fields, an indoor sports hall, pool, bike and walking trails and other sport and recreation facilities. Detailed consultation with the community and other stakeholders will be undertaken before the final model is confirmed.
Origin Energy remains committed to funding the new facility's construction.
The former centre at Myuna Bay will be demolished. The site will essentially be revegetated and returned to crown land.
I'll be able to release more details later today, but I wanted to share this fantastic news with you first. This will be the first new Sport and Recreation facility built in NSW in more than 40 years, and is something I know our local community deserves and will really enjoy.
While I thank the Office of Sport, the State Government and Origin Energy for taking my proposal on board, I also want to thank Terry Pascoe and the Eraring residents’ group for their patience and support in getting this option over the line.
I extend those thanks to the entire local community who have got behind my campaign. We're indeed going to get a fantastic result and things are finally moving forward!
