¿ COVID UPDATE / MASK FINES INCREASE - Thurs July 29 ¿
¿ The Premier and Police Commissioner have today announced that fines for not wearing a mask when required will more than double from $200 to $500 from tonight. The fines will apply statewide.
¿ The announcement comes after another day of record infections in Sydney.
¿ There were 239 new cases of community transmission in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. Of those people, 88 had been doing essential work or shopping in the broader Sydney community while unknowingly infectious before their positive test. That does not auger well for infection numbers over the next week.
¿ There are 182 people now in NSW hospitals with Covid-related illness with 54 people in ICU and 22 on ventilators. Sadly, two more people have died in Sydney overnight, bringing the death toll from the current NSW outbreak to 13, and 68 since the start of the pandemic. The national death toll stands at 923.
¿ It’s now been 357 days without any community transmission in the Lake Macquarie-Newcastle area.
¿ Pleasingly, there has so far been no community transmission on the Central Coast to our south (beyond the five members of the same household which were reported on Monday). That means there has been zero community transmission north of Hornsby so far, which is great news.
¿ Please remember to use common sense when moving around the place and get tested immediately if you experience any symptoms. Please stay vigilant and stay safe!
