This week is NAIDOC Week and despite many of the planned events being cancelled or postponed due to the Covid restrictions, there are still ways to get involved in some way.
The theme of this year's celebrations is 'Heal Country' and I think that's something we all need to play a role in.
Our country is inherent to our identity - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially and culturally - and we can learn so much from our indigenous and First Nations people.
We have a wonderful indigenous community in Lake Macquarie and I'm very proud to represent them in the State Parliament, but we all know that we have a long way to go to redressing historical injustice. We can't change history but we can accept it and change the future.
Healing Country is not just about the physical healing of the land we now share, but healing our historical and political associations so we can empower and celebrate our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
We all have a role to play there.
By the way, the 2021 Westlakes NAIDOC Ball which was being organised by Biraban Local Aboriginal Land Council has been postponed to July 24. Tickets are still available on the Biraban Lalc Facebook page.
Happy NAIDOC Week everyone!
