It is with great sadness that I note the passing of a stalwart of the Lake Macquarie community, Ron Mitcherson. His life was one of exemplified courage, service and sacrifice. As a young man Ron served in the Army's Royal Australian Infantry Corps, completing a 12-month tour in Vietnam, where he faced unimaginable horrors while answering the call of duty. Transitioning from the battlefield to the streets, Ron then continued his commitment as a guardian of our community serving with the NSW Police for more than 20 years. Ron was President of the Toronto Diggers Club, a position that he held for eight years. He was also a Life Member of the club, having served on the Board of Directors for 19 years. He was also an active member of the Toronto RSL sub-branch for more than 30 years, and a great supporter of returned servicemen. For many years he was the driving force behind Toronto ANZAC Day service. I extend my deepest sympathies to Ron's family and friends. He will be dearly missed. Vale Ron.
