Relatively few people ever trek to Everest Base Camp, let alone do it twice in rapid succession. I'm proud to recognise Lake Macquarie mum Katrina Croquett, co-founder of Women Embrace Adventure, who recently completed back-to-back Everest Base Camp journeys in Nepal. In April, Katrina first trekked with her husband Pete and their sons Luke, Jake and Tyler, reaching base camp on 15 April after days of steep climbs through the Khumbu. She then farewelled her family, turned around, and led a group of Australian women on the same demanding trek, covering around 260 kilometres across snow, ice and suspension bridges to 5,364 metres. Since launching in 2018, Women Embrace Adventure has donated more than $150,000 to various local charity groups through fundraising events and adventure experiences, helping more women back themselves and take on new challenges. Katrina's resilience and leadership are a wonderful example of what local people can achieve on the world stage. Katrina's achievement places a spotlight on the growing movement of regional Australian women leading and participating in global adventure travel, while continuing to base their businesses and communities locally.
