Joelle Coutet-Roberts
Racism and the lasting impact it has on individuals and communities is an ugly and deeply important issue. Recently, I was blown away by the sheer talent of 2024 HSC Visual Arts student Joelle Coutet-Roberts from Charlton Christian College, who managed to encapsulate this topic through her work 'A Bag is a Bag; Wrapped in Plastic, Held in Fear'. Joelle's artwork, created through an innovative combination of photo-media, plastic bags, brown paper bags, card, bubble wrap, string, and rubbish packets, is both thought-provoking and visually striking. It's no surprise her work has been selected for the prestigious First Class 24 exhibition at the Museum of Art and Culture Yapang. The everyday items Joelle has chosen symbolise the layers of fear, prejudice, and societal perceptions that are often wrapped around the lived experiences of marginalised individuals. Joelle's work not only showcases her impressive skill as an artist, but also her ability to use art as a platform to inspire reflection and social dialogue. It encourages viewers to consider their role in confronting racism and promoting greater empathy within our communities. Congratulations Joelle on your truly remarkable artwork.
