I am pleased to congratulate Mr Gary Neville Mitchell OAM from Woodrising on being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2026 Australia Day Honours, in recognition of his outstanding service to community history. For decades, Gary has worked quietly and tirelessly to preserve the history of Lake Macquarie and ensure the people and events that shaped our region are not forgotten. His research, writing and advocacy have strengthened local historical societies, supported community education and created an enduring record for future generations. Perhaps most notably, Gary is the driving force behind the Forever Remembered project, conceived almost 30 years ago to identify and honour World War I service men and women buried in unmarked or neglected graves. Beginning at Sandgate Cemetery, one of the largest in New South Wales, Gary has personally researched, documented and located hundreds of veterans, often using his own time and resources. Through his work, dozens of war graves and memorials have already been constructed, with many more approved. Gary's work reflects a deep respect for service, sacrifice and local history. This honour is richly deserved, and Lake Macquarie is better for his dedication.
