Few people can claim 40 years of continuous volunteer service to their community, which is why it was particularly special to see Cherie Bateup recognised at the recent 2026 NSW RFS Central Coast Volunteer Appreciation Day and Medal Presentation. Cherie was awarded the NSW RFS Long Service Medal 3rd Clasp in acknowledgement of four decades of dedication to Wyee Brigade and the broader Rural Fire Service family. While much of the public focus during emergencies is rightly placed on frontline firefighters, brigades also rely heavily on volunteers working tirelessly behind the scenes. For many years, Cherie played a vital role within the Wyee Catering crew, providing support during major incidents including the Newcastle Earthquake and numerous large-scale bushfire emergencies. Her contribution goes far beyond operational support. Cherie became deeply involved in community engagement activities and played an important role supporting Cadet Championships from local competitions through to State-level events. She has also remained a constant and valued support member within the Brigade community over many years. Cherie's tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to supporting her RFS team has greatly benefited the Wyee Brigade, and her recognition is thoroughly deserved. Well done Cherie.
