Please keep safe over the holiday period. Use caution near water - accidents happen quickly and can be so devastating. Remember
drinking and driving can be costly in many ways. Don't forget the sun screen while enjoying our great outdoors.
Take care so we can all have a happy, healthy start to the New Year which will hopefully bring better times ahead.
We've had trying times with the weather and tough economic circumstances in recent years so hopefully 2009 will be a better year for all of us.

LANDCARE FOR YOUTH GETS FUNDING
Lake Macquarie Landcare has been awarded a $75,000 grant by the NSW Government's Environmental Trust for its Landcare For Youth project.
Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, said "Landcare for Youth deserves support as an important step in restoring the lake and its catchment."
The aim of Landcare for Youth is to use hands-on projects to provide education on protecting biodiversity by restoring damaged environments.
According to Mr Piper, the project is in line with the guiding principles set by the Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority.
"Population growth and increasing urbanisation puts more pressure on the lake and the areas around it," said Mr Piper. "We want to keep the lake in good condition for the future and involving young people in this is vital."

IMPROVEMENTS FOR DORA CREEK SCHOOL
Greg Piper, Member for Lake Macquarie, congratulates the parents of Dora Creek pupils for successfully lobbying for repairs to the school's demountable buildings. The buildings' roofs have been leaking and have undergone a string of unsuccessful repairs.
Parents from the school wrote to Mr Piper, who raised the matter with the Minister for Education asking for a permanent solution. The Minister has responded to the needs of the school, with permanent repairs being made to the roofs and the gutters being cleared more often.
"Parents wrote to me complaining about mouldy classrooms and rotted carpets," Mr Piper said. "This situation needed to be fixed and I'm glad that's happened."
According to Mr Piper, the new metal flashings over joints in the roofs will stop the leaks and repairs to the ceilings will stop debris falling into the classrooms. Since the repairs the carpets have been cleaned and dried.
