ACCESSIBILITY upgrades at two Hunter train stations are a step closer after the awarding of design contracts.
Detailed design work for an upgrade to Waratah train station on the Hunter Line will be completed Gartner Rose, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) announced on Tuesday.
"A contractor has been appointed to deliver this essential accessibility upgrade at Waratah station that will greatly benefit our less mobile customers," a TfNSW spokesperson said.
"Detailed design for the project will now start and be guided by the feedback received from the community late last year. Construction will then commence in coming months."
The upgrade includes three lifts linked to the existing footbridge, an accessible parking space, accessible toilet, new pedestrian pathways, improved access to the waiting room, and upgraded CCTV and lighting.
Other improvements include an upgrade to the existing kiss-and-ride parking area and taxi zones on Railway Terrace and the construction of a new short-stay parking zone on Platt Street.
Gartner Rose has also been awarded the design contract for upgrades to Wyee train station on the Central Coast and Newcastle Line.
The works are similar to Waratah, although Wyee station will have a new kiss-and-ride parking space on Gorokan Road.
"I'm pleased a contractor has been appointed to help deliver this essential accessibility upgrade at Wyee that will greatly benefit older people, people with disabilities and those travelling with prams and luggage," Lake Macquarie MP Greg Piper said.
Both upgrades are being delivered under the Transport Access Program, which is a state government initiative to deliver safe, modern and accessible public transport infrastructure.
Greg Piper has been an independent voice for the people of Lake Macquarie for more than 30 years, as a Member of Parliament, Mayor and councillor. He was elected to Lake Macquarie council in 1991, served as Mayor from 2004 until 2012 and has been the State MP for Lake Macquarie since 2007.
