The Prime Minister has just announced a three-step process to ease the country out of the COVID-19 restrictions.

He is allowing the States to set their own dates for these stages, so there are no dates yet announced for NSW. I expect we'll know more over the coming week.

It's important to bear in mind that NSW has been hardest hit by the pandemic and is arguably at greater risk of a second wave because of the higher density of populations in the state's major cities such as Sydney and Newcastle.

The PM's phased recovery includes:

STEP 1: Small cafes and restaurants and libraries reopened but using existing social distancing rules. Gatherings of up to 10 people allowed. 30 people allowed at a funeral, 10 at a wedding. Playgrounds reopened and outdoor exercise groups allowed. Local and regional travel allowed.

STEP 2: Groups of 20 allowed to gather, which would allow a staged reopening of things like caravan parks, cinemas and gyms.

STEP 3: Groups of 100 allowed to gather, which would allow a staged reopening (depending on health data) of places like clubs and pubs, nightclubs, shopping centre food courts.
