Elected as the Mayor of Lake Macquarie in March 2004, Independent Councillor Greg Piper was first elected to council in 1991 and served as Deputy Mayor through 2000. He has been very active on council, sitting on and chairing, numerous Council and State Government committees.

Greg has always had a strong focus on the natural environment and it was this that led him to stand for Council initially. His role with the Estuary Management Committee, the Lake Macquarie Project Management Committee, the Hunter Waste Management and Planning Board and numerous other committees has allowed him to pursue his goals whilst still attempting to deal with the many issues brought before Council.

He understands that there are huge demands on the city coming as a consequence of rapidly increasing population growth and is very aware of the need to balance this development pressure with the protection of the natural environment and the relaxed nature of our city.

Greg is a keen social tennis player and enjoys reading, surfing, and travelling. Playing, collecting and restoring guitars is one of his favourite hobbies. He enjoys spending time with his wife and family including his dalmatian dog.
